OUR SERVICESAt Friendly Visiting, we recognize the invaluable contributions seniors have made. Our goal is to provide services that will help make their lives just a little bit easier. We offer a variety of ways for homebound seniors to spend an hour a week making connections with our Friendly Visitors. CompanionshipWouldn’t it be nice to have someone new to talk to? Volunteers who are carefully trained and screened enjoy sharing their time with someone who is older and wiser and has had a lifetime of life experience. Our friendly visitors are available to spend one hour a week and provide much needed companionship that homebound individuals may need to alleviate their loneliness. Wonderful relationships and friendships have evolved over an hour weekly visit. Our visitors come from all ages and stages of life. This allows the matching process to be flexible and accommodating to the homebound individuals and friendly visitor’s preferences. ReadingNothing beats the simple pleasure and common reward we all get from reading a good book, magazine, or newspaper. Unfortunately because of visual impairments, many of our elderly participants suffer the additional indignity of not being able to read. If you or someone you know still enjoys the pleasure of a good book or magazine, but has a visual elated problem that prevents them from doing so, we can help. We carefully match seniors with a visitor who can spend an hour each week visiting and reading a favorite book, magazine, newspaper or even help with mail, all in the comfort of their own home. Shopping and EscortFor many homebound individuals getting around on their own is often a challenge in itself. Our group of Friendly Visitors are available and able to assist with light grocery shopping, local errand running, and other “out of house” tasks. Homebound individuals may still love a stroll around the neighborhood, or the simple pleasure of local window shopping. This great weekly service can provide them with convenience and assistance in everyday outside chores, and in general, can make their life that much easier. Senior Connect NYGeneral SupportAs we all do from time to time, the homebound may experience traumatic times in their lives. This can include episodes of general depression, the loss of loved ones, or extended recovery from a recent illness or surgery. Our Friendly Visitors can offer an important ear by just sitting and listening to their worries. Telephone ReassuranceSomething as simple as a phone call from friends or loved ones can brighten up the day of almost any homebound individual. In fact, many homebound individuals rely on the telephone for their outside contact. If you or someone you know still enjoys having phone conversations with nice people, this service is perfect! A weekly phone call with a volunteer can be scheduled at a mutually convenient time for both parties. Phone chats average about 15 minutes, but of course, we place no time limits on these calls. |
